It depends on where you live. In my area (central MA) a good set of gel nails is $50-$60. In Southern Cal I bet you could get them for $30
My daughter paid 拢40 at a salon and they did look good but she has to have them touched up every 4 weeks and that costs 拢20. The only problem is ';time'; It took 2 hours to do them and over an hour to touch up.They are time and money consuming, but try it.

If you are going to a nail salon they will cut them for you to the desired length. If you are doing them yourself cut them as short as you get them without getting into the quick of the nail bed. Have had my done before and had them done for my wedding as well. You will love them if done properly.
I like to keep mine a little bit shorter before I get them put on, because otherwise your real nails are visible under your fakes when you turn your hand over.

The most coarse is used to shape the nail %26amp; will get through thick gel/acrylic with no issues. The remaining three files are essentially a set of ';buffers';, you can pick these up in drug stores or nail bars for a small cost, they will leave your nails with the original shine you left the salon with...finish with a top coat of clear polish applied in 3 strokes (one in the middle, two either side) and nobody will be any wiser that you've touched them up yourself :)Can i file down my own gel nails, or will it effect the coating?

I have my nails manicured, but they are gel, not polished. If I don't want to continue getting them with gel at any time and just want the gel off, is there a way to do that at home? When I used to work at a nail salon, this is what they did..
Soak it in acetone nail polish remover. Every 5 minutes, use a nail file or a buffer and **GENTLY** file away the bloated/sticky glue, wipe with paper towel, and continue soaking. Continue until you get all the gel off. The more acetone the nail polish has, the faster the gel will come off..
soak in acetone and marbles. the marbles help to remove the gel layer because they are stronger than acrylic. Marbles hit against the gel to come off. Becareful though you might ruin your real nails.
I suggest just going to the salon. They drill the gel layer off. It only cost about $10.
Put some nail polish remover and some warm water in a bowl, and leave your hand in until they come off.
Its best to go to the salon though, then you wont harm your nails.
If they're really gel nails (Like LCN) they wont come off in acetone. You have to file them off. I would just go back to the salon and have your nail-tech do it.

To soak them off properly use a GLASS bowl, and get a towel or two (or you can double fold the single towel) and soak your hands in it till it desolves..the beauty supply store also sells cuticle sticks (orangewood sticks) and as you see the enhancement breaks down just scrape the gel in a downward motion they should come off with no problem...just don't force the nail off you run the risk of damaging your natural nail. If you are doing them at home. If you have any more questions about anything related to hands or feet I can gladly answer any questions you may have! :)

I am going to my high school reunion on Friday and for the first time in my life I am getting faux nails done after much badgering from my friend. My outfit is black, shades of grey, and red so I really want Black nails with Red tips (a satanic frencg manicure? LOL) but do not want acrylics. Thus far, all I run across wth gels online is that they are natural, french, and sometimes sheer pink. Is it possible to get colors? And a good UV lamp will cost you from $150-$200 all by itself. But, if you don't have a license to do nails, you cannot buy professional products. So, back to square one now. Let's just say that you were able to get the supplies, equipment, and all the products that you need - what will you do now that you have it all? You need to know about product chemistry, nail anatomy, the proper methods of application, cure times, which products to use - and when to use them, and so much more. My advice to you is to leave this sort of thing to a professional. It is much more difficult to do than it looks. I do both acrylic and gel nails, and gels were not easy to learn - that's for sure. I have since mastered them, though it took a LOT of patience, and a LOT of practice to get to the point where I am now.beauty blush brush

Also a salon that does bio sculpture is reccomended as all their gel products are natural and are designed to cause as little damage to your nails as possible.

Gel nail ridge problem - damaged nail?

I am taking a nail class in July as I want to learn how to do my own gel nails/toes, but in the meantime have been going to an Asian salon (I must admit, I go because it's cheap). The first time they did a great job, but this time I can still see a ridge on my nail and it looks like they drilled too much. Should I go back and tell them I am not happy? What you have are called rings of fire. Its very common in salons like the one you go to because most of them are unskilled and do not do a good job on nails. Trust me when I say this. You only think they do a good job right now because you don't know any better. Once you have been properly trained, you will most likely be thinking to yourself, how could I ever have gone to one of those chop shops? Because only then will you be able to know there is a right way is to do nails - and a wrong way as well as what a set of nails that were done properly should look like. These salons use huge brushes and slop on the acrylic. The end result is a very flat, unnatural looking nail that is typically made from milky colored cheap acrylic. Its no wonder they always try to hide the shoddy work they do underneath a few coats of polish.
Now, what can you do to fix it? Absolutely nothing. You have no choice but to wait until it has grown out. There is no product that will fix it for you. The so called tech in one of these chop shops over filed your nails - as they typically do, and the result is what you see on your nails. If you want to avoid this from happebing in the future, then I suggest not going to a discount salon to have your nails done. Sure, it is cheap. But if you pay for cheap nails, you will get cheap nails.
I could go on all day about these salons and how they cheat the public by scamming them in so very many ways its not even funny. I honestly with the general public would stop giving their hard earned money over to these salons. They aren't worth it, believe me. But again, you won't be able to see that for yourself until you learn how to do nails the right way. Only then will you be able to see the light. Avoid discount salons at all costs...
I am taking a nail class in July as I want to learn how to do my own gel nails/toes, but in the meantime have been going to an Asian salon (I must admit, I go because it's cheap). The first time they did a great job, but this time I can still see a ridge on my nail and it looks like they drilled too much. Should I go back and tell them I am not happy? What you have are called rings of fire. Its very common in salons like the one you go to because most of them are unskilled and do not do a good job on nails. Trust me when I say this. You only think they do a good job right now because you don't know any better. Once you have been properly trained, you will most likely be thinking to yourself, how could I ever have gone to one of those chop shops? Because only then will you be able to know there is a right way is to do nails - and a wrong way as well as what a set of nails that were done properly should look like. These salons use huge brushes and slop on the acrylic. The end result is a very flat, unnatural looking nail that is typically made from milky colored cheap acrylic. Its no wonder they always try to hide the shoddy work they do underneath a few coats of polish.
Now, what can you do to fix it? Absolutely nothing. You have no choice but to wait until it has grown out. There is no product that will fix it for you. The so called tech in one of these chop shops over filed your nails - as they typically do, and the result is what you see on your nails. If you want to avoid this from happebing in the future, then I suggest not going to a discount salon to have your nails done. Sure, it is cheap. But if you pay for cheap nails, you will get cheap nails.
I could go on all day about these salons and how they cheat the public by scamming them in so very many ways its not even funny. I honestly with the general public would stop giving their hard earned money over to these salons. They aren't worth it, believe me. But again, you won't be able to see that for yourself until you learn how to do nails the right way. Only then will you be able to see the light. Avoid discount salons at all costs...

Some are called ';resin'; or ';light concept nails'; (lcn). There are different names - they use lights to harden the gel. There aren't the harsh odors, chemicals, etc. like there is with acrylic. They can cost a bit more - but they are worth it if you want something healthier than acrylic. They also shouldn't allow for separation - which can cause nail fungus. They will use a manual file on your nails at the end to finish the form - which is great. The electric file is so bad on your fingernails.

Fiberglass looks awesome but they are even more expensive but look great :) I have a good enough nail stylist that I can go with clear nail polish for a French with just her 'work' with Gels. I love em :)

Is it the one in the little tube? You have to cut the little plastic top off so the gel can come out. When I do my fake nails I use this brush on glue. It's like painting on nail polish but it's glue. I would recommend the brush on glue because it's easier to use than the gel one.
Also for applying the gel one just squeeze it onto your nail or the fake nail. Then use the tip to spread the glue around so it's even.

They will often over-file your nails, resulting in a very thin, and weak nail plate. The cheaper salons will often use a harmful substance called MMA on your nails, and yes, this can - and usually does, ruin them. MMA is banned for use on nails in many states, and is even illegal to use on nails in a few other states. Its not something you want to have put on your nails! There are other things too. But, in almost every case, its not the acrylic, or gel that damages your nails. Its a bad tech more often than not who will do that for you.
BTW, nails do not have to breathe. This is a common belief that many people have but its simply not true. Nails are primarily composed of dead keratin cells. Personally, I have never heard of anything which was dead that needed to breathe for any reason. I mean, its dead! And so are the cells that make up your natural nails. Thus, no need for them to breathe. They are not living organisms. Like I said, its a myth that many people mistakenly believe in. But, its really a minor issue and there isn't any harm done if someone believes that nails need to breathe. Also, fungus is not usually a problem which occurs on fingernails. Toenails are much more suitable of an environment for a fungus to take root and multiply because they provide the ideal breeding ground for this type of condition - little, or no air circulation with shoes on, dampness that develops from the natural process of sweating but has nowhere to escape and stays inside your shoes which creates a warm, humid place that fungus thrives in. It is not common at all for fingernails to get a fungal infection though it can happen. The most common infection of a fingernail is bacterial. This is a harmless condition in most cases, and usually no medical treatment is needed. But, the nail enhancement should be removed at the first sign of an infection, and not reapplied until the infection has completely healed itself over the coarse of a week or two, perhaps a bit longer. Simple exposure to clean air will heal most cases of a bacterial infection in no time at all. Thus, the nail enhancement must be removed so that air can get to the infection and dry it up to kill off its food supply - moisture. How to tell the difference? If the technician used any liquid and powder on your nails, they are acrylic nails - not gel. UV gel nails are made from - as the name implies, gel that is similar to the consistency of a hair gel. Gels are never a powder though many salons will try to tell you its ';powder gel.'; Sorry, but there is no such thing as powder gel!
Assuming that you have real UV gel nails, do NOT buff them as suggested by another answer. This will most definitely ruin the shine and there is nothing you can do at home to restore that shine unless you have a UV lamp and some UV top gloss or sealer. I have always opted for gel nails which are more costly over the acrylic as I was told they are more realistic looking. However in comparing my daughters acrylic nails and my gel nails, i don't really see any difference and even prefer the pink tint that she has on her acrylic nails. These gels are from a top of the line gel and acrylic nail product company. I provided this link because, unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there getting what they think are gel nails only because thts what the tech told them they were, when in fact they are getting acrylic nails with a UV gel topcoat and thats all. Put it this way: If the tech uses ANY liquid and powder - as in acrylic applications, then you are not getting gel nails - you are getting acrylic nails, but are probably being charged the higher gel nail price. Remember, gell is NEVER a powder. It is a gel, just like in the pic. This may not apply to you, but I just wanted to bring it up - just in case. Gels are available in a wide variety of colors including glitters, shimmers, and bold %26amp; bright colors. The possibilities are really endless when it comes to gel nails. But, it takes a highly skilled tech to do gel nails, and make them both look good, and wear well. The product line the tech uses makes a huge difference in the end. There are many really cheap gels available that techs use which will yellow over time, they tend to lift more, and break easily. So, It really depends on the skill level of the tech, and what product line they are using. It takes a long time, and a lot of experience doing gel nails before a tech can master them. They are easy to do, but very difficult to master. And many techs never will master them. You just have to find a tech who is really skilled in applying them
If you don't have a choice of colors available to you, then may I suggest finding a diferent tech? I say this because you said that you preferred your daughter's pink acrylic over yours. That leads me to thinking that you had only clear, or perhaps only clear and a white used on them. I could be wrong though.
When getting a set of gel nails, expect to pay a minimum of $45. I've seen them as high as $85, but that was for LCN gel nail products. This gel line is arguably the very best nail gels available. They are imported from Germany, and they cost about three times as much as their competitors products do. But they are terrific gel products. If you can find a tech who uses genuine LCN products, and is highly skilled in applying them, I would highly recommend getting a full set of them applied, that is as long as it is within your budget. I know, it is a bit pricey, but they really are worth it! Other good gel manufacturers are CND, Young Nails, Akzentz, Light Elegance, and Biosculpture is pretty good too. Those are the major gel lines. Any others I would be skeptical of. Always be sure that the manufacturs label is on the container of gel that the tech is using. Good gels are ALWAYS clearly labeled by the manufacturer, and look very similar to the gels in the pic. Unlabeled containers are a cause for concern that the tech is using substandard gel, and I wouldn't ever recommend that kind of product to anyone.
Lastly, are they better? IMO, yes, they are. They look more realistic, they are durable, they are flexible which means LESS breakage, they are non-toxic, good gels are non-yellowing, and you can go longer between fills because gels have less of a tendency to lift.
If you are not getting one or more of the things I described, or are experiencing yellowing, lifting, breakage, and so on, then I would suggest changing salons, and getting a better tech.

These gels are from a top of the line gel and acrylic nail product company. I provided this link because, unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there getting what they think are gel nails only because thts what the tech told them they were, when in fact they are getting acrylic nails with a UV gel topcoat and thats all. Put it this way: If the tech uses ANY liquid and powder - as in acrylic applications, then you are not getting gel nails - you are getting acrylic nails, but are probably being charged the higher gel nail price. Remember, gell is NEVER a powder. It is a gel, just like in the pic. This may not apply to you, but I just wanted to bring it up - just in case. Gels are available in a wide variety of colors including glitters, shimmers, and bold %26amp; bright colors. The possibilities are really endless when it comes to gel nails. But, it takes a highly skilled tech to do gel nails, and make them both look good, and wear well. The product line the tech uses makes a huge difference in the end. There are many really cheap gels available that techs use which will yellow over time, they tend to lift more, and break easily. So, It really depends on the skill level of the tech, and what product line they are using. It takes a long time, and a lot of experience doing gel nails before a tech can master them. They are easy to do, but very difficult to master. And many techs never will master them. You just have to find a tech who is really skilled in applying them
If you don't have a choice of colors available to you, then may I suggest finding a diferent tech? I say this because you said that you preferred your daughter's pink acrylic over yours. That leads me to thinking that you had only clear, or perhaps only clear and a white used on them. I could be wrong though.
When getting a set of gel nails, expect to pay a minimum of $45. I've seen them as high as $85, but that was for LCN gel nail products. This gel line is arguably the very best nail gels available. They are imported from Germany, and they cost about three times as much as their competitors products do. But they are terrific gel products. If you can find a tech who uses genuine LCN products, and is highly skilled in applying them, I would highly recommend getting a full set of them applied, that is as long as it is within your budget. I know, it is a bit pricey, but they really are worth it! Other good gel manufacturers are CND, Young Nails, Akzentz, Light Elegance, and Biosculpture is pretty good too. Those are the major gel lines. Any others I would be skeptical of. Always be sure that the manufacturs label is on the container of gel that the tech is using. Good gels are ALWAYS clearly labeled by the manufacturer, and look very similar to the gels in the pic. Unlabeled containers are a cause for concern that the tech is using substandard gel, and I wouldn't ever recommend that kind of product to anyone.
Lastly, are they better? IMO, yes, they are. They look more realistic, they are durable, they are flexible which means LESS breakage, they are non-toxic, good gels are non-yellowing, and you can go longer between fills because gels have less of a tendency to lift.
If you are not getting one or more of the things I described, or are experiencing yellowing, lifting, breakage, and so on, then I would suggest changing salons, and getting a better tech.

gels nails are more flexible which in turn can cause more breakages.. Gel often peels off the natural taking a few layer of nail with it.. Acrylic will tend to lift around the edges and not peel like the gel do.Acrylic is more durable

Apparently I have 'gel nails'. At least that is what I asked for... and paid the extra money for! However to my disappointment they were not set under a UV Lamp and they are not particularly shiny. When I got my refills they did not do any maintenance of the white line of the tips.
Should they have fixed the white tips of powdered gel nails? I wonder why she didn't.
Can I switch to the proper gel nails without ripping all of my nails?
If the process starts to sting like hell is there anything that they can do to stop it hurting or has the damage already been done?

Well being a nail tecnication I can most confidently tell you that you did not get gel nails at all. Any type of gel ranging from the most expensive Brisa gel to light concept nails by creative concept nails, to the cheapest ';powdered gel'; all must me cured under a UV light to sort of ';activate'; the gel. It sounds to me like you got ';powdered gel'; but did not get the last gel activating coat over it which that is done under the UV light. Think about it they call it gel for a reason, because the product is gel, not a powder and a liquid. This is because you probably went to the corner store nail shop with the asian people, yes the do the nails but butchar them and use cheap products. Moving on to the white tip, I am a little distored because with real gel the white part is a type of gel that is cured under the UV light, part of the whole nail process. What you probably got is a white tip that requires no maintance when getting a fill. On the the part of the stinging part, that is not normal at all, getting your nails done should NEVER hurt, if they do the person did something terrible wrong. I am taking a guess that you went to the corner nail shop where the first thing they do is take their nail drill and drill your nail with it. 1. that is not even a real nail drill they use it is a engine bought at a hardware store with a nail attachemnt on it real nail drills are around $400 for a good one. 2. you NEVER EVER EVER drill on the natural nail that RUNINS your nail for good by thinning it out so that it will never return to the same thickness. Instead real nail techs. take a file and more or less scrape the tope simply to get the oil out of the nails and to open the pores. The others use the drill to save a lot of time. They probably did it extensively and that is why your nail is sore. Now the hard part, because I do not know for shure what product you got i am not to shure what to say about taking them off. In my personal and professional opinion I think you got some sort of powdered gel with no activatior. With that being said, DO NOT take them off, the people say that it is ok to take them off with no problem, but don't listen to them. Think about it, gel nails can not be penetrated by acetone(nail polish remover) or any other chemical, acrylics can but gels can not. So they will soak the nail which makes you think helps but does nothing then they will pull them off. BAD IDEA!!!!!! never ever ever pulll off fake nails! Think about it they just drilled off half the thickness of your nail away, then they are going to pull of something attached to them. Hello?!? Not a smart idea.

The difference is that gel nails are more natural and a lot easier on your natural nail. Acrylics are much more harsh on your nail and make your natural nail much weaker than they were before you put the acrylics on.

A truly professional nail technician will always put the health of the natural nail first and foremost and will never ';rough'; up the natural nail. A couple of strokes in one direction with a file that is no less than 240 is all that should be done on the natural nail, if the tech is using a really low file like a 100 or even a 80 grit, run, run away fast. I'm using my husband's account. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and have gel nails and get them done every three weeks. I'm thinking I may not have time to get my nails re-done every three weeks but I'm not sure because this is my first baby. Hello STW. There are salicylic acid solution you can buy at Walgreen. It will remove almost anything. Just be careful. You don't want to ruin your beautiful nails.How exactly do you remove gel nails without going to a salon?
It's quite painful but the best way to do it is to get a very thin metal nail file and slide it between the gel and the nail itself to pry it loose. A second or simultaneous method is to go to a beauty supply and get acetone and soak your nails in it. Although acetone will severely dry out your skin and it will take a while to break down the nail, it wont do it completely and youll still have some pulling to do.
3rd, get ahold of a dremel tool and grind them down. Not many people have dremels laying around though. Good luck.

Wrap each nail in a strip of aluminum foil and let it do it's job (it will take quite a while). It will go quicker if you put your hands under a uv lamp or md heat lamp. Most of the gel will melt and get wiped away when you remove the cotton balls.

When i had to take my nails off, i filled up a bowl with really really hot water, and put another smaller bowl of nail polish remover in it and soaked my nails in that for a while. It should come right off in a few minutes. Make sure you put a towel over the bowls, and cover your hand as well, so you dont get high off of the fumes !

try putting your hands in hot water and use hair dryer and blow hot at your one nail until the glue become melted, then ta da, easy peel... then wash the glue off immediately with hot water and plenty of soap.. to some people, hair dryer might be too hot for their hand to handle.. but it's the best way to not damage your nails..
Try using acetone , dilute it first approx. half acetone half water and soak your nails in the solution for a few minutes . Try buyin acetone at your local salons or have a look online. :)
well if you dont have acetone, ive used vinegar before (i know...weird) but it worked for me. your real nails get a little chipped and brittle but its better than them coming completely off.

Are you absolutely certain that you have UV gel nails? It's easy to tell the difference between gel and acrylic nails. Did the tech use ANY liquid and powder on your nails? If so, then you have acrylic nails. Even if they put a gel topcoat on you, they are still acryic nails. Gel nails are made with, you guessed it, gel, LOL! UV nail gels look like this:

I'm asking this because there are a lot of girls out there who think they have gel nails simply because they paid for gel nails, and that is what they asked for. But, there are a lot of scammers out there who will give you acrylic nails - which are cheaper, and charge you the full gel nail price, which is always more than the cost of acrylic nails. Pretty sad, huh?
The bottom line is this...Acrylic nails are removed by soaking the nails in pure acetone. But, UV gel light cured nails are non-porous. Thus, they cannot be soaked off, they must be filed off. If your nails are indeed real UV gel nails, then you could sit for hours with them soaking in polish remover and not a thing will happen to the nails. It just doesn't work with gel nails. Filing them off is the only way to remove them. If you have a salon remove them for you, do NOT allow them to pry or tear them off or your natural nails will be damaged quite badly and you will feel a lot of pain. That is the wrong way to remove them. Don't let any tech do that to you. You will regret it for a long time to come because it takes months for the nails to heal from the damage they did to them. You need to find a tech with lots of experience removing gel nails by filing them off. An unskilled tech can file them off...Anyone can file them off. But, it's not quite that simple. An unskilled tech can easily file off too much and ruin your nails by filing down into them instead of taking only the gel off and stopping at that point. I hope this helps...
When i had to take my nails off, i filled up a bowl with really really hot water, and put another smaller bowl of nail polish remover in it and soaked my nails in that for a while. It should come right off in a few minutes. Make sure you put a towel over the bowls, and cover your hand as well, so you dont get high off of the fumes !
My nails were fine afterwards, just a little brittle but that always happens after you have nails on.Is there any way to take my gel nails off without COMPLETELY ruining my real ones?
try putting your hands in hot water and use hair dryer and blow hot at your one nail until the glue become melted, then ta da, easy peel... then wash the glue off immediately with hot water and plenty of soap.. to some people, hair dryer might be too hot for their hand to handle.. but it's the best way to not damage your nails..

Can I swim in a chlorinated pool if I have gel nails?
I just had my first set of gel nails done 2 weeks ago. I am a keen swimmer but am worried if I go swimming that they will fall off.Can I swim in a chlorinated pool if I have gel nails?
You can go swimming with them, but keep in mind that the longer your hands are in water, the more water can start to penetrate around the cuticle edge of the nail, and can cause the gel nails to start to lift away from the natural nail as the natural nail swells upon lengthy water exposure, and then shrinks again as they dry. This expansion and contraction causes the adhesive to break some of it's bonds. If it's just every now and then, social swimming won't be too bad, but if you do it regularly, I think the gel nails would be a waste of money to try to maintain.Can I swim in a chlorinated pool if I have gel nails?
