What is the difference between acrlylic and gel for your nails?

Acrylic nails are made from a combination of liquid (monomer), and powder (polymers). The technician will first dip their brush into the liquid, then in the powder, and the small bead which is formed from this is applied to your nail. It takes normally 3 or 4 beads of product to form a complete nail. These beads contain the acrylic, which 'hardens on your nails within a few minutes though for it to completely 'cure,' it takes between 24-48 hours.

Gel nails are made from, um, gel! It has the look and consistency of a hair styling gel, and is available in many colors. Gel nails made with top quality products are more natural looking than acrylic nails. Gel is also non-toxic, non-yellowing, and has no odors associated with its application as acrylic does from the liquid.

One note: Gel nails are made from gel, and nothing else. It is applied usually in several layers. Each layer must be individually cured under a special ultraviolet lamp for about 2 minutes. Gel nails NEVER contain any liquid and powder, so if the tech uses any, then you are getting acrylic nails, and not gel. This happens often in the low price 'discount' salons. You will ask for gel nails, they will give you acrylic nails, and maybe put a UV gel topcoat on them and tell you they are gel nails - and charge you a higher price for those so-called 'gel' nails. Sorry, they are NOT gel nails, those are acrylic nails. Beware of this scam because gel nails cost more than acrylic nails simply because the gels used in the application process cost more than acrylics. To see what gel looks like, follow the link below:

http://www.cnd.com/Home/homelink-consume鈥?/a>

This particular gel line is made by one of the best gel nail companies in the world. But, that is what gel looks like. Remember, it is never a powder, ever. Don't let the tech tell you, ';It powder gel'; because that does not exist.

A couple of other things: Acrylic nails tend to hold polish better than gels. Also, acrylic nails are porous, and that means they can absorb colors from polish easily. Always use a basecoat to help prevent this. If you want to have them removed, always make sure that the tech does not rip them off , or tear them off your nails. They are to be soaked in acetone.

Gel nails are non-porous, and therefore cannot be soaked off in acetone. They must be filed off by a very skilled technician, or your nails will get ruined from over-use of the file on your nails - or worse, a drill that was used by an unskilled tech will ruin your nails too.

Gel nails do not hold polish as well as acrylic nails do. Always use a good quality basecoat to give the polish something to adhere to.

Remember: It is not the use of acrylics, or gels which ruin your nails (unless the acrylics contain MMA, that WILL ruin your nails). It is an unskilled technician who will ruin your nails, most often by the use of a Dremel on your natural nails. This tool is not meant to be used on nails - it is made for woodworking, and other hobbies, NOT nails. But the discount aslons use them anyway. Do not let anyone use a drill on your nails. All that is needed is a gentle hand filing to remove the natural shine, and nothing more. Don't let any tech tell you otherwise. And seriously, stay out of the discount salons. You get what you pay for, and if you are paying only $25 for full set, then don't expect much except for ruined nails! And the language barrier is horrible in those places too. avoid them, really.

I hope this helped out a bit! What is the difference between acrlylic and gel for your nails?
acrylic tends to be more ';stiff'; meaning when it grows out you need to get a refill after 2 weeks otherwise they will lift and look crappy.. And they tend to RUIN your nails

Gel on the other hand is more soft for your nail and look more natural.. And needs a refill 2-3 weeks..

I honestly prefer gell because it looks more natural but they break a lot easier... =)What is the difference between acrlylic and gel for your nails?
gel are better for your nails. They also have less harsh chemicals so your nail lady doesn't need to wear a little mask. In my opinion Gel are way better. They are newer and better!
acrlyic is made out of powder gel is made of gel
I totally asked my manicurist that same question once. She said that acrylic is laid down on top of the nail but remains a seperate layer of your nail. So, say you slam a hammer on your hand, you will crack the acrylic but not the nail. But, she said gel infuses with your nail bed. Meaning, if you hit your hand with a hammer, you would crack the gel AND your nail. OUCH!

Hope that helps!

How can you remove the gel from your nails when you get tips?

after the tip is gone, can you use nail polish remover to get off the excess gel?How can you remove the gel from your nails when you get tips?
No that doesnt really work too well. You either have to get them refilled, get them removed at the salon, or just wait for them to fall off on their own.

Is it possible to get gel or acrylic nails without the tips?

I want to grow my nails naturally but i don't want the tips put on them as i can't have my nails very long for my work, so can i just get the acrylic ot gel coating just to keep them stronger? Is it possible to get gel or acrylic nails without the tips?
i get mine gel coated and if you want they can paint them a random colour or have tips but if you want you can have no colour and they look really natural.

but if you get your hands wet a lot at your work then your nails get soft and the gel falls off easier.

but i have had mine gelled for about a year now (i need to get them filled in every couple of weeks or so - depends on how fast your nails grow) and they look great

i would definatly recommend gel coatings!

  • My friend has gel nails and she wants to remove them but she has no acetone. what is another way?

please help!My friend has gel nails and she wants to remove them but she has no acetone. what is another way?
I think she'd be best off to go back to the salon and have them removed there. They will know the exact product or system that they use, therefore they will know how to get them off the quickest and with the least damage to your natural nail and nail bed. If you put too much pressure on the nails when trying to remove them, it could damage the nail matrix where the new nail cells are being formed. My friend has gel nails and she wants to remove them but she has no acetone. what is another way?
Just tell her to cut them all off. It's a very painful process but it works well and i've stupidly done it heaps of times. If not, she can try using a nail polish remover to soften them a bit before cutting them. (most nail polish removers contain acetone). Hope this helps
get them removed by a professional
no without damaging her nails and/or nail bed...

How do you apply gel on nails?

So i was shown how to do it, and i'm not a professional neither have i studied into it lol and every time someone does them for me they're fine but when i deo them myself they seem to like peel off the next day. What am i doing wrong? xHow do you apply gel on nails?

The prep work really makes a difference. You have to use a nail dehydrator after filing the nails. Also, a good protein bond must be used.

Are Gel Nails or Solar Nails the best?

I want to get nails but not for sure which ones are the best. Please help. Are Gel Nails or Solar Nails the best?
Gel Nails are better becouse they last 2 weeks longer than Solar NailsAre Gel Nails or Solar Nails the best?
I actually prefer the solar because they do not discolor or yellow like the gel nails will. I have tried both and to me, again, just my opinion, the gel nails seem less sturdy to me - and I'm super hard on nails. I've worn solar nails for several years now, though and it's been a while since I've tried the gel again, so there may have been some improvements.
Gel nails are better, in my opinion. Just to clarify something, solar nails are acrylic nails. They are just calling them by another name, but there is no difference.
gel nails ,r better i think even if u hit ur finger or nail on something it wont break easily

How can you tell if your gel or acrylic nails need to be refilled?

I had mine done a week ago and know you can see a little under half a mm of my nail. Does this mean i should get them refilled? How much should a refill cost%26gt;How can you tell if your gel or acrylic nails need to be refilled?
Well, with mine I have two signs. I get french-tipped so when I see the growth of my regular nail starting to get transparent, I know its time. Secondly, I take a look at the nail bed and how far away the acrylic has grown away from the cuticle. I get it refilled when a sixth of my natural nail from my nail bed is showing.

If you're getting a French, a good technique is to ask her to extend the white portion on your nail bed so it's thicker. That way, your natural nails don't begin to show for a while and you can go longer than a month on that.

Generally speaking though, you should be getting your nails filled again three weeks to a month. The price range here in Canada is $60 for a full set and $45 for a fill but going down to $40 for a full set and $35 for a fill. Yours depends on where you live, I would call around to ask for prices because many places charge different fees. You should also ask people you know about the service because it's not worth paying cheap every month if your nails are going to end up rotting. How can you tell if your gel or acrylic nails need to be refilled?
when your real nail is growing out, yes thats when you need a filling depends where you live i t usually range from 12-15
you need them infilled every 2 weeks, with only 1 week growth they should still look ok, infills should cost you about 拢15-17 approx

What is the difference between acrylic, gel and silk nails?

I had acrylic nails put on today but I was wondering what the difference was between Acrylic, Gel and Silk nails? What is the difference between acrylic, gel and silk nails?
the materials that are being put on your nails. acrylic is that powder they mix with liquid and put it on your nails. it hardens and turns a clearish white. gel nails are a different material and don't feel as hard. i think they are better for your actual nail. silk if i remember from beauty school is just a little sheet of silk they put on your nails and then paint over with glue so it stays. it is supposed to strengthen your nail and is also used to repair breaks and cracks

Whats a good age to wear gel nails or acrylic?

Okay im wondering if my age is appropriate for those nails..?

thats too young. but if you like it go get it.

they mess up youyr nails though, since your nails cant 'breathe' behind the plastic they get bendy and weakWhats a good age to wear gel nails or acrylic?
    thats fine
There is not a specific age. However, do be aware that any sort of artificial nails will weaken your own nails as well as put you at risk for nail infections. If you just have to do this, try to at least go with the tips rather than full nails.

Are gel nails okay during pregnancy?

I am in early pregnancy and I like to have my nails done. I have heard differing opinions on this topic, and I would like to get some information on it from credible sources NOT just opinions. Please respond with tact. Are gel nails okay during pregnancy?
It's always nice to be pampered while pregnant, isn't it? The main concern is usually the fumes in the nail salon. Doctors vary on their advice, so you should check with yours for advice.

Congratulations, and I hope you get the pampering you want! Are gel nails okay during pregnancy?
ITS fine,my DD had hers done while PG and baby is fine.He is even advanced,7 months old and crawls, stands up in middle of floor dont take steps yet but getting braver.Doctors were shocked when seen it,
I have gotten my nails done my whole pregnancy and my Dr. has never said anything about it. So to my knowledge I would think it to be ok.
The fumes are not safe. They even say that for stylists dealing with color %26amp; highlights. My doc said 4 me not to color highlight anyones hair while preg. Hell and that is my job! (stylist for 14yrs) Have u ever taken a wif of a nail or hair salon? Especially a nail salon. Stinks to high heaven. You breathe those fumes, they do too. To the other post: Just because someones baby wasnt affected doesnt mean yours wont. the other post Sounds like a teenagers mentality. It wont happen to me... But If you really really want them done wear a mask or see if they will do it by the door and have it open. I would buy a better ventalated mask at the hardware store. Not the cheap flimsy ones. • Can you get gel on natural nails instead of tips?

I just took off my tips a month ago and finally grew back my nails and now there not weak anymore. I want to get them done but everytime I do the paint chips off within 3 days. Can they put gel over the color to keep it from chipping?

If so how much should it cost? Can you get gel on natural nails instead of tips?
This still wouldn't be that effective the paint chips because your nail grows around the edges of your nails it will still chip

It would help a bit just not a significant difference

Can I get gel over my nails without tips?

Hi, I have pretty nice nails that grow very long, but they aren't very hard and break easily. I use Nail Tek intensive therapy to make my nails hard, and its helped a bit, but they're not as strong as I would like. Can I get gel on my natural nail without tips to make them hard? Can I get gel over my nails without tips?
Yep, you sure can. If you are feeling brave, you can do it yourself, however I recommend going to a nail salon.

You can also do a silk wrap, which is still very strong, but remain quite flexible. Can I get gel over my nails without tips?
Yes, you can. But you need to buff your nails first and then you will need a Primer. It will take a bit time but its worth.

    1) Buff your nails

(CAUTION! not to much, as it will damage your Nail)

    2) Clean your Nails with Nail cleaner or Nail Polish

    3) Then put the Primer on

    4) Let it work for at least three minutes and make sure you don't touch it, needs to stay clean.

    5) Then you can continue with the Gel.

For the quality it's better to buy it at a Nail Salon as over Ebay, know that, out of own experience. The products should come all from the same line.

I hope that helps you a bit.

    Best Wishes,

    Meg

Pros and cons of acrylic and gel nails?

can any give me some info on which is the best, gel or acrylic? things like price, durability, looks, convenience etc.

i have had acrylics for the past 7 years and are thinking of trying the gel nails, i always have french tips can this be done with gel?Pros and cons of acrylic and gel nails?
Yes Gel can have french tips. I would def. go with gel over acrylic, they last longer, are more natural looking, less prone to yellowing.

So yeah, gel is better, you should try them outPros and cons of acrylic and gel nails?
To me, gel %26amp; acrylic are about the same. It is very time consuming and expensive (depending on your budget %26amp; where you go ~$45/month)

Personally, I had gel nails done for my wedding 5 years ago. They looked great BUT... the day after I returned from the honeymoon, a nail got caught in the car door and snapped off. ~$5 for a repair.

About a month later, I was sick of them and decided to get them all off. They use a Dremel (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00961132000P?vName=Tools) to grind down the acrylic/gel at the expense of your natural nails. I had a ridge that gradually grew out of my nails - it took about 3-4 months.

If you have already done acrylic and are thinking of moving to gel, I recommend getting your natural nails healthy again. It's not good for them to always be covered in polish or acrylic nails.

And yes, you can get french on a gel.
I have never had acrylic or gel nails. I think natural nails is the way to go a lot less upkeep and a lot less to keep up with.

I don't know if french tips can be done with gel.

It sounds like either one would be expensive because of the maintenance.

I used to get manicures but stopped as of two years ago because it got to be too expensive.
Never even heard of gel nails.

I would guess acrylic is more durable and probably cheaper since not too many places have gel.
ok seriously, you should just use your own nails. that's free and they're not fake!!!!
your own are the best, give them some loving care, you'll be amazed.

Other just look bad, no matter what anyone says

Is it safe to go into the sauna if i have acrylic or gel nails on?

I believe it's safe. Hot temperatures won't affect them.Is it safe to go into the sauna if i have acrylic or gel nails on?
Absolutely! Hot water will not effect your artificial nails.

You do want to stay away from household cleaners or anything that is oily. These will damage your nails and possible cause them to ';lift.';Is it safe to go into the sauna if i have acrylic or gel nails on?
    you should be alright

What's the difference between gel and acrylic nails?

At a salon near by me, I can either get acrylic nails for $16 or gel nails for $25.

I haven't had either but I wanted to know whats the difference between them. Not just the fact that ones made out of gel and the other is made out of acrylic. What's the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
I've never had gel nails, but according to my shiny new cosmetology textbook, there really isn't enough of a practical difference to justify spending that much more. Gel is a newer technique, and it isn't supposed to smell as strongly as acrylics do during application, but acrylics are supposed to be a bit more durable. Gel also requires a uv light to set.

Of course, the best way to know the difference would be to ask the salon about it.What's the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
Acrylic is a harder substance. Gel is more flexible. My experience is that gel doesn't hold as well as acrylic.
try both and see which suits you better.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a> mine please?
i wondered that to. ask them at the salon when u get there.

    Shrinking of UV nail Gel?

I recently started using a UV nail kit I got for christmas - applying my own acrylic nails at home. My problem is it doesn't matter HOW much I put on the gel always seems to shrink from the edges of my nails and appear as if it's halfway applied. It either shrinks from the edges (sides) of the nails, or it shrinks from the tops of the nails. I have tried multiple applications, using side to side applications over the tips of the nails, everything - the gel is still shrinking when it hardens and bunching up and bulking up in the middle of the nails. Is there a way to beat this??? Is there a technique to stop it? Would I be better using acrylic powder?Shrinking of UV nail Gel?
UV gels ordinarily are prone to some shrinkage during the curing process. Generally, how much they shrink depends on the thickness of the UV gel which has been applied. A thick layer will shrink more than a thin layer. A thick layer will also result in intense heat 'spikes.' And if you haven't had one of those yet, watch out because they can be rather painful. If this happens just remove your hand from under the lamp. You could also place your hand right in front of the lamp for about 10-20 seconds, but not directly inside of it. Then cure the remaining time with your hand all the way under the UV lamp. This will help if you get a heat spike. A similar method is also used to help 'freeze' the gels so that they won't run on your nail. The video below discusses this method briefly.

The first thing I would suggest is to make sure that you are applying, and curing the gels properly. It would take me hours to type in all the steps, so let me post a few links to a video, and some tutorials which may be of help to you. After all, they say that a picture is worth a thousand words - or something like that , LOL! The video assumes that the viewer has basic knowledge of the gel application process. So, some of the terminology may seem a bit foreign to you. Pay close attention to the way that he is applying the gels. Note the way he uses his brush. Proper application of gels is all in the technique.

  • What are the differences between the 3 types of fake nails: acrylic, gel, and silk?

I've only used acrylic. They are very thick, and I can't go without nail polish. Do silk or gel appear more natural? What are the differences between the 3 types of fake nails: acrylic, gel, and silk?
Acrylic, you know what that is, the powder and liquid. The gel is a powder they apply to your own nail and wet it with gel to make your nail stronger. Silk is actually silk, cut to the length and width of your nail and applied with a liquid and buffed.. There are also solar nails, like the acrylic, but they use two different powders (pink and white) and they dont polish them, just buff with a cream....they can make all of them thin if that is what you want. I would try them to see which you favor more. Everyone's tastes are different.

Those rings mean they are drilling at your cuticle too deep at each fill in. You definitely should find someone else. They just look at you as another fill in and not trying to keep you. They would not be doing this if they were more professional and careful. What are the differences between the 3 types of fake nails: acrylic, gel, and silk?
Maybe it's not the fact they are acrylic.... but the technique of your nail tech! The people I currently go to now do very nice natural looking acrylic nails for me. find a different tech and see if they don't do better work.
gel is more natural definatly, i dont know the sciece behind, but thas silk is not whats up!

What is the difference between gel and acrylic nails?

I've always just gotten gel. Are there any pro's and con's?What is the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
Acrylics are powder and liquid mixed together and applied onto the nail. They air dry very quickly.

Pros: They are harder than gels, so if you want super long nails, they would probably be the best choice to go with. They're also quicker to have done than gels, and can be removed by soaking them in acetone.

Cons: They're heavier, they yellow, shine disappears quickly, and when your nails grow out, the gaps really stand out.

Gels come in a pot, filled with a honey like substance. They use a flat brush to apply a coat onto your nail, and then harden it under a UV light.

Pros: They're lighter, stays shiny, no yellowing, gaps don't show as much (assuming that you have french or clear). They're also not as thick so they look more natural.

Cons: The traditional (most common) gels can't be removed in acetone, so you have to get them filed off which takes a long time and it can easily damage your nails if removed improperly.

Neither system is ';better';. It just really depends on what the person's needs are. What is the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
Good choice! Gels are much better than acrylics! Gels have been around for about 5 years, so a lot of older techs haven't been educated on this product! Gels are hypo-allergenic, and they also keep a permanent shine unlike acrylics. The only down side to gels are that you have to get them removed professionally while acrylics can be removed at home. I strongly advise not to pick at any products on your nails as permanent damage can be done to your real nails. I have had gel nails for almost a year now, and I love them! it helps that I'm a nail tech, and have all the supplies at home :)
Acyclic nails are tougher in my opinion but they definitely damage your nails WAY more...I got them once and when i took them off i had ridges in ewww it was so weird..
Sometimes there are blindingly obvious answers to issues like this nevertheless maybe not this time.
I don't even know what gel nails are but I get acrylic one's and I love them!

Are gel nails sharper or are acrylic nails?

I need protection in college. Are gel nails sharper or are acrylic nails?
Acrylic is more sharp and harder than gel. The gel nails are to flimsey. Are gel nails sharper or are acrylic nails?
Acrylic lend themselves to become very sharp, but the crack easily. The gel is stronger but harder to sharpen.
acrylic is better in your case but if your worried about jamming your nails get gel becuase thell bend a little and not hurt as much as acrylic would
Acrylic is stronger. Gel is more flexible. Personally, I prefer acrylic. They stand up to much more abuse.

Be sure to find yourself a reputable nail technician. Stay away from budget nail salons. Remember, you get what you pay for.
umm well my sister has really short nails so they told her that gel nails will help for her nails to grow so she got them but yea i dont know the difference that much between gel and acrylic nails but i think that acrylic nails are shaper depending how u get them shaped
Your own nails would be a better idea. Both of these other choices can create infections in your fingers %26amp; nails. You can strengten your own with Sally Hanson-Diamond Strength-instant nail hardener.Which can be bought @ Walmart for less than 6.00.Which costs less than fake nails. Also wear large rings on fingers, makes a nice homemade brass knuckles.LOL works really.

I have gel nails done but they always come away at the side. How can i stop this from happening and why does?

The person doing your nails is not priming the sides of your nails properly. The gel lifts when the nail isn't porous enough to stick to it. Tell her about it.I have gel nails done but they always come away at the side. How can i stop this from happening and why does?
this happens when your nails grow...just go back and get them filledI have gel nails done but they always come away at the side. How can i stop this from happening and why does?
Try insisting that they put the color on prior to the gel. Most manicurists will put the gel nails on first, and then apply the color on top. Doing this leaves the color exposed to the elements.
its either cuz of poor nail workmanship or because ur nails are growing. gel nails arent suposed to lift at the sides, so i would assume its because ur nails are growing. theres nothing else to do about it but to get a fill.
It also could be from the natural shape of your nail bed. If you are having tips applied, they need to match the shape of your nail bed, for example, curved versus flat. Also, if your nails are exposed to a lot of water, this can cause your natural nail to swell, and later when the natural nail shrinks as it dries, it could pull away from the gel.

I use to get acrylic nails until someone told me about the gel nails....I think gel nails are better they seem stronger as far as breaking and when you need a fill they tend not to show as much as acrylic's do!!! Not only that but I smudge nail polish soooo bad!! And with the gel..once your done your done you don't have to wait for them to dry..and if you get the french tips they do it then put a layer of gel over which is really nice, because your nail polish doesn't rub off on the edges it stays there until you go for a fill which with gel you can go every 3 weeks instead of 2!!!!Whats the difference between gel and acrylic nails meaning which is a better option and why?

How do u take off fake gel nails?

The best way to remove your nails at home is to soak your fingers in acetone or acetone-containing nail polish remover for 15 minutes and then proceed to remove your nails gently from the cuticle up. You can use a clean fingernail file to do this. Be careful that you soak your nails long enough to loosen them and be careful when removing them. How do u take off fake gel nails?

buy 100% acetone from the grocery/drug store (uber cheap!) and saturate cotton pads with it. place the cotton over your fingernails and wrap each finger in foil. blowdry on low head each of your fingers and then just let them sit for 10 mins or so, maybe less. done and it's cheaper than going to the salon! and a lot less damaging to your nails. be sure to get 100% acetone! :DGIRLS: is there an easy way to take off gel nails?

you can soak them in finger nail polish remover dissolve the glue on them or if you take them off from the sides its sooo much easier
soak them in an acetone nail polish remover and then warm water. Never just rip them off you could seriously damage your nails
Let them set in Fingernail Polish remover.
go to the salon and get them dissolved off.
I soak my fingers in nail polish remover that work good!! !!!!!!
the only other way it to go to a salon and get them taken off.
soak themm in nail polish removerrr, and then warm water :)

What is the point of getting gel nails? other than looking good?

It's a great way to support thin and weak nails. My nails are like that, so I always have gels applied on my natural nails. They grow out, and I don't have to worry about it chipping! What is the point of getting gel nails? other than looking good?
Nothing really. It's all aesthetic. They can tear your nails off if you take them off incorrectly, and they weaken the nails. What is the point of getting gel nails? other than looking good?

Can your nails grow back after having gel nails not taken off properly?

i went to a different nail salon and ask to get my gel nails takin off and the person basically cut my tip then ripped off my top coat to get them off. and i asked arent u supposed to soak them in some type of solution first and he said no becuz he this way work too...now im scared the my nails are gonna be damaged foreverCan your nails grow back after having gel nails not taken off properly?
I mean it's not really a good thing to do but I actually just did that with my gel nails. I just ripped them off. And yes it messes up your nails but if you get like nail strengthener or something and keep it on your nails it should really help. Can your nails grow back after having gel nails not taken off properly?
They won't be damaged forever, but it will take time for them to look good again. They will be very thin for awhile, probably one or two months. They will also break really easy and probably chip a lot. I don't know if he buffed your nails or not (I would assume he did), but if he didn't I would buff my nails ASAP to make the top layer of nail smooth and even. I would also use a strengthening nail polish to get them stronger quicker.
They shouldn't be damaged forever. It will take time (like up to 6 months) for all the old nail to grow out. Next time you get your nails done, go to a reputable salon and not a budget nail salon. They do so much damage to your nails!
no, they will grow back. just make sure you have alot of calcium in your body to make them grow fast and thicker.

Are gel nails applied with a powder (a ';gel powder';) or only liquid/gel?

I was told that gel nails still use a powder but it's a ';gel powder'; and then it's finished with the liquid/gel topcoat UV gel. Is this dishonest because I read that gel nails should not be using any powder - that the powder is acrylic. I heard both - please someone help me get to the bottom of this. Are gel nails applied with a powder (a ';gel powder';) or only liquid/gel?
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Here, take a look at this. These are real UV nail gels. Top quality gels at that. This is what the entire nail should be made from.

    http://www.cnd.com/Home/homelink-consume鈥?/a>

    Do you see ANY powder in his pic?Or do you see ';gels?';

This should answer your question for you. There is no such thing as a ';powder gel.'; Gels are gels, NOT powder. Ever. BTW, UV gel containers are always clearly labeled by the manufacturer, similar to those in the pic of gels. Beware of handwritten labels. Gels simply do not come in unlabeled containers, nor do they come with handwritten labels. Also, gels are premixed as a gel by the manufacturer. There is NO way for a tech to ';pre-mix'; gels. In other words, there aren't any gel products that come in a powder form and all that it needs is for the tech to add liquid to make gels. It's simply not possible.UV nail gels and acrylics are both from the same chemical family, but they are from different 'branches' of that family. Nevertheless, acrylic nails are made from liquid and powder, and UV gel nails are made from gel...Ever see a 'powder' hair styling gel before? No, they don't exist. Well, the same thing applies here. Powder gel for nails simply doesn't exist.

See for yourself, and watch this video if you would like to:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4roVJ61j鈥?/a>

Do you see any powder being used during the application of these UV gel nails?

And yes, it is totally dishonest to be giving people acrylic nails when they are paying for gel nails - which are always higher priced for two reasons. 1) Gels are more difficult to apply and more time consuming than acrylics, and 2) The UV nail gels cost much more for the tech to buy than acrylic products.

I hope this helps to answer your question! Are gel nails applied with a powder (a ';gel powder';) or only liquid/gel?
I have been getting what they call '; powder gel nails '; for 2 years now . Looks like am getting ripped off too. They use liquid and powder , then overlay it with a gel coat in the end . After watching the video above , I now know the difference . Thank you , I will look in to this .

1st off I'm gonna disagree with the answer that Nicole left u..I'm a nail technician and been doing nails over 10 years. Yes, gels are gels, but the reason why they came out with gel powder is because the liquid gels alone is weak. The power gel is clear like gels and u use the liquid gel to finish.

There is Uv gel powder, I've tried it before, it is Pronails brand. The application is like acrylic but when you put on the nails it will melt the powder and it becomes gel. Try it! I like it.

There are instructions online...But you won't be able to work in salons, or charge people because the state board WILL find out, and they will fine you. You need a license.

Nail technicians, what is your favourite WHITE GEL?

I have used Amore self leveling white, Amore ultra white builder, and another one, but i melted the lid so I don't know what it's called exactly but something like W international I think. Anyway, I want one that's good for sculpting nice, not-too-thick nails. Oh and I use forms, not tips. Thanks!Nail technicians, what is your favourite WHITE GEL?
I have tried several gel lines in the past. The ones that I have had the best luck with are Young Nails, and Akzentz. I find Akzentz gels to be a bit better in terms of workability though. YN tends to be a little too thin for me, but it works great for many techs.

Of course, LCN is arguably the best gel line that there is, but the cost of their gels are very high as they are made in Germany, and imported. So, you would have to weigh the cost vs. benefit with this line. Overall, their gels are great, but the cost is about 2-3 times that of a 'regular' gel.

Then there is CND Brisa gels. These work very well, and are widely available at most professional beauty supply stores.

I've tried others, but these are my favorites. Out of them all, I would have to give my vote to Akzentz. Their gels are quite workable, long-lasting, non-yellowing, and the cost of their products is about the same as other comparable gel lines. I'll give you the web sites to each.

All of them have various white gels available. But, I would highly recommend not mixing the various lines, though I know it is possible to do so in some cases. In short, you may want to purchase a trial kit from one or more of them and try the gels out to see if you like that particular line - or not. At least that way you will have the gels and other products you will need to get started with any one particular company's system. It's best not to mix and match among gel - or acrylic lines, in my opinion anyway.

  • How can you tell the difference between acrylic nails and gel ones?

I think i might have the gel ones but im not entirely sure what the difference is. Do they both start in the powder form? How would I know which ones i have on me. Thanks! How can you tell the difference between acrylic nails and gel ones?
I think they both look terrible. Here's something consider: Hospitals will not allow workers or doctors to wear them because they harbor bacteria. Yeeewwww! How can you tell the difference between acrylic nails and gel ones?
acrylic start in the powder form and have a sort of dim look to them before they are painted...gel on the other hand starts off as gel and before they are painted have a nice shine to them.......i have acrylic at the mo but tomorrow I'm doing them gel..........i like that better....xxx
You probably have acrylic. Gel costs a little more and you would have to ask for it!
Gel usually starts as a gel. The acrylic is a powder they mix. Gel is a lot softer, and can usually soak off, and break easily, but they look a little nicer than acrylic (at least in my opinion) mostly because they are not as thick. Especially if you are looking for something which looks more realistic/natural.
they are done exactly the same but gel ones dont look as thick as the acrylic ones. you have to be more careful because they arent as strong as acrylic... so they may need replacing quicker x
No acrylic start with the powder and the gels start as gel and they put then under a UV lamp
gel nails are not as hard their more fexible. They are eaiser to soak off.
I have gel nails and they do not start off as a powder. Gel looks exactly like a clear hair gel in a pot. The use a tiny brush to apply it and not the big acrylic brush.

Gel nails are more flexible and are the most natural looking fake nails you can get. After they apply the gel, you have to put your hands under a UV lamp in order to cure or harden them.

You would definitely know if you had UV gel nails because it makes your nail beds burn as the UV light is hardening them. They are hella more expensive than acrylic nails. An acrylic set may run you as much as 60 bucks in an expensive place and gel nails are over 100 dollars.

Dip your fingers into acetone and the gel nails are going to dissolve. I would like to know how I get fake gel nails off without going to the salon.?
First clip them short and then soak them in acetone (nail polish remover).

Get the salon strength version from a beauty supply store.

You can even buy these little fingertip caps that you can snap onto your nails and pour the acetone in there.

After you soak them, us a cuticle board to scrape the goo off, then rinse and file the excess away.
go to the pharmacy and ask about something to remove fake nails..but be careful or you may damage your nails..because in the salon they use strong glues to stick the nails so be careful or you may damage the outer layer of your nail that naturally keep your nails strong ,healthy and shining
You can buy stuff at Wal-Mart or Sally's that will take them off, it is kinda like polish remover. After you get them off, file them carefully and put a clear polish , like Hard as Nails, on them because they will be soft. Good Luck!
If they're UV light, Your going to have to buff them off layer, by layer..If not, Soak them in Acetone for 10-20 minutes, then take a orangewood stick, or something close to that, and push off the nail.
You should buy nail polish remover with acetone and dip your fingers in for prob 20 mins this will dissolve the nails and make them easier to peel off so will be less damaging to your own nail =]
go to a pharamacy, supermarket or drugstore and buy Acetone Nail Polish remover and soak them for about 15 mins. they will come off
if you soak your nails in warm water for about five minutes,

they should just fall off of be easier to take off.
try to put them on hot water

but i suggest you to go to the salon because they are gel
file them down alot . then soak them in nail polish remover .

they'll start comming off at the sides .
    saw

What is the difference between GEL nails and the regular acrylic ones? Are there more types? Thanks~!?

In a nutshell: Acrylic nails are applied using a liquid and a powder. They are available in a wide variety of colors, and the possibilities are endless in terms of what a GOOD tech can do with them. Here are some examples of what a highly skilled tech can do for your nails by using acrylics:

    http://www.christiesnails.com/greatnails鈥?/a>

    http://www.christiesnails.com/glitters.h鈥?/a>

Gel nails are made from products which belong to the acrylic family, but are applied differently, and have a different consistency than acrylics. They are just as the name implies - gel. These are also available in a wide variety of colors. The gel nails are applied in several thin layers. And each individual layer must be cured under a UV lamp for about two minutes before the next layer is applied. But remember, gel nails products never, ever come in a powder form. If the tech uses any liquid and powder on your nails, then you are getting acrylic nails, and not gel. Don't let them try and fool you into believing that they are gel nails. This is a common scam among the cheapo salons.

Basically, acrylic nails arenot as realistic looking as gel nails are. But it depends on the tech and the products she is using. Whatever you get, do not go to a discount salon, loosely defined as a salon that charges like $25 or less for a full set. These places are bad news. They use the very cheapest products available (hence the low prices), they are often unlicensed, unskilled, and unqualified. They will more often than not ruin your natural nails. In short, they do not know how to do nails the proper way. They also are very limited in their ability to do nails of any kind. Usually, you will not find a discount salon that uses more than two different colors of acrylic products. They will also try to scam you be doing things like telling you that these so-called Solar nails are some kind of new non-acrylic nails. Thats pure bull. They are acrylic, plain and simple. But they;ll charge you more for them anyway. They are well known to be very unsanitary, and that is a good way to catch a nasty infection because they will keep using the same files and implements over and over again without disinfecting them first. For them, its quantity over quality. They simply do not know how to do nails. Period. Just avoid them at all costs.

    Costs:

For a full set of acrylics, expect to pay about $40-$45 for a basic set. For Pink %26amp; Whites, the price can be as high as $75 or more. I charge $75 for my P%26amp;W full sets.

Gels start at $45-$50, and can go up to $85 or more for a full set. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, because they will be referring to discount salons. They are the only ones who charge less than what I just said. But you pay for cheap nails, and you will get cheap nails.

The products that a tech uses makes a HUGE difference in the final result of your nails. There are some really good products available, and they can cost a lot of money for the tech. And therefore, you will end up paying more, but in the long run, its really worth it to have the best products used on your nails.

In my opinion, you should give gel nails a try. But remember what I said, gel products are never a powder. Here is what a really good gel line looks like:

    http://www.cnd.com/Home/homelink-consume鈥?/a>

As you can see, the container is clearly labeled by the manufacturer. If your tech uses unmarked containers, this is a bad sign, and it usually indicates that they are trying to hide the fact that they are using bad products on your nails. If that happens, tell the tech that you want to see the original container. If they can't show you, or if they won;y show you, then get up and leave. Do not take their word for it. They can tell you anything, just to make you happy. Make them show you the original container. In good, reputable salons, that will not be an issue. It usually only happens in the discount salons. They always use unlabeled porcelin containers. That is not a good sign at all.

Anyway, I hope this helped, even a bit.

Sorry for going on so much about the discount salons, but I see the results of their work on a regular basis, and generally, its absolutely horrible. They do the worst nails that I have ever seen in my entire career in the nail industry. But for some strange reason, a real lot of girls think that these cheap places are the ONLY place that you should get your nails done at. They could not be more misinformed. It simple is not true.

Find a really good tech at a reputable salon, and you will do fine. Just stay out of the cheapo salons. Trust me on that. What is the difference between GEL nails and the regular acrylic ones? Are there more types? Thanks~!?
