Will IBN do as much damage as acrylic? What are IBN Gel Nails? How are they Different than LCN? Better or Worse for your nails?
I think you are referring to ';IBD'; gels.
IBD gels are a line of gel products which have been around for years, and a lot of techs use their products. Personally, I have not yet tried IBD gels. I have a starter kit, but have not had the chance to actually sit down and try them out for a while. But I can say that many techs use their products, and seem to have great results with them.
One of the things that turn a lot of other techs off the IBD products is the fact that they are available for sale to the general public in places such as Sally's. This fact alone causes many techs to not even try them because there is a belief that if products are available to the general public, then they must not be as good as strictly professional products, such as LCN is. You must be licensed, and be able to prove it before the folks at LCN will even talk to you about buying their products. Its just a mindset that many people have, thats all.
IBD gels are fairly inexpensive gels. On the other hand, LCN is manufactured in Germany, and their products are much more expensive than other gel lines. But, are they 'better' than other gels? That point is debatable. I have had great results with LCN gels. I know that LCN is a very reputable company, and many clients ask for it by name. They are well known throughout the nail industry as a top of the line gel manufacturer, maybe even the best there is. BUT, a gel can be the best that is available, yet if the technician is not sufficiently skilled, it will not work for them.
Essentially speaking, gels are easy to apply, but they are very difficult to master. You need to find yourself a highly skilled tech if you want the best results possible for your money.
You see, a highly skilled tech who uses IBD gels and applies them properly, will give you a much better set of nails than a tech who uses the higher quality LCN products, but is not very skilled in their application. So, in my opinion, it comes down to how skilled, and experienced the individual technician is with a particular gel line.
Expect to pay more for LCN gel nails simply because the products cost so much more. About $55 for a full set is the lowest that I've seen for real LCN nails. It can be as high as $85 as well. They are great products though - when applied correctly!
This 'rule' applies to acrylics as well. There is a common thought out there that acrylics are harmful to your nails, and will damage them - or even ruin them. I have found this to be false. It is not the acrylic that will ruin your nails, it is an unskilled tech who ruins your nails.
Bottom line is this: Avoid the discount salons, and work on finding a technician who is highly skilled, experienced, licensed, and uses the best quality products available. I can provide a link or two to help get you started in finding a good tech. One is to CND - a top name in the nail industry. They make both acrylic and gel products along with a complete line of mani-pedi products. This is good stuff! All of the techs listed on this salon locator page have been thoroughly trained by the company, and are certified by them prior to their being listed on this page. You can find a good tech this way. The other page also has a lot of skilled techs listed on it. Its a great place to start:
